Expedia of printing world to launch

    October 31st, 2008 · No Comments

    <Press Release>

Did you know that 94% of knowledge workers consider the printer to be an essential office technology and it is most missed while working out of office? I wanted to let you know about the upcoming launch of a cutting-edge e-commerce platform that is set to revolutionize the way that people and businesses buy and sell print services over the internet. As the first and only vendor-neutral aggregator of print providers, Earthtone is set to reshape an online printing market dominated by a few big-brand printers’ choice-poor proprietary solutions. Although the $12 billion quick printing industry is dominated by a few big brands, it is almost completely (90%) composed of smaller, locally-focused and independently operated print businesses. Without the economies of scale or the technical expertise to develop and deploy the world class online printing capabilities required to compete with the market leaders, these small businesses’ ability to attract and retain online customers has been significantly limited.

Like Expedia in the travel sector, Earthtone will give print buyers the ability to search for providers - by proximity, environmental credentials or specialization - according to their unique requirements and provide them with a secure and efficient way to submit files and pay for their orders online. At the same time, Earthtone’s platform is designed to support print providers of any type, size and location so as to maximize the choice available to buyers. Location-based search combined with fully integrated shipping ensure that buyers have the option of using the services of any of the hundreds of print providers on the network, irrespective of distance.

Also, buyers will be able to read and post user-reviews. At no charge, all users will be able to enjoy secure online document storage, file sharing, accounts-management, location mapping and many other features that make Earthtone more than a robust and user-friendly online printing solution.  With over 1,000 independent print providers signed up across the US and the UK, Earthtone’s choice-rich printing platform empowers print buyers by giving them efficient access to services and pricing from more suppliers than any other online printing gateway.

Earthtone launches next week. For a sneak preview, please contact Earthtone by emailing contact@earthtone.net and let me know if you are interested in speaking to Earthtone pre launch.

    10. Electric Stapler - My Top 10 Low-Tech Gadgets

    July 11th, 2008 · No Comments

I teach a computer seminar at my local library twice a month. As part of that seminar, I create handouts from PowerPoint for the attendees. They are usually 3-5 pages long and I print out about 20 copies for each class. While I do have manual staplers, I prefer my electric stapler for this routine job. After separating each printout, it quickly staples the sheets together.

If you have never used an electric stapler, here is how it works. When a pile of papers is inserted into the stapler (kinda like a punch clock), a motor drives the stapler down creating a clean, crisp staple. Inside the stapler is a small arm that slides back and triggers the motor. There is a wonderfully loud “thunk” as the staple is driven through the paper.

The model I have only staples about 20 standard sheets of paper. There are larger, more heavy duty electric staplers available. I found many models available ranging in price from $30 to over $300, depending on your needs. Check your local office supply store or online at: www.officemax.com, www.officedepot.com, www.staples.com.

    Dean’s Top 10 Low-Tech Gadgets

    July 10th, 2008 · No Comments

As many of you know, I have been guest blogging over at the Totally Cool Tech website.  I think Norbert does a great job at finding unique items to include in his podcast. It has become apparent that I can’t keep up with all the great stuff he finds. So, I have decided to take a little different approach to my blog posts. I am going to create Top 10(or so) lists. I will do a different list every month and the posts will appear between two and three times a week, with a wrap-up at the end of the list.

For my first list, I took a look around my house and found 10 gadgets that met the following criteria. They had to be low tech and singular purpose. What follows in the next couple of weeks, is my list of favorite low tech gadgets that I own.

If you have any comments, suggestions or ideas for new lists, please post a comment on any of the Top 10 blog posts.

Patch Tuesday plus a Pending Update to Windows Update

    July 8th, 2008 · No Comments

Today is Micrsoft’s Patch Tuesday.  If you have automatic updates turned on you should see updates appear sometime today.

Microsoft also announced an update later this month to its Windows Update Service.  If you remember last year they just updated this service without informing the public and there was a huge outcry from the tech community.  InfoWorld has a nice article on the update located here: http://www.infoworld.com/article/08/07/08/Microsoft_warns_users_of_coming_update_to_Windows_Update_1.html?source=rss&url=http://www.infoworld.com/article/08/07/08/Microsoft_warns_users_of_coming_update_to_Windows_Update_1.html

Please take a few moments and update your computers, by tomorrow the bad guys will know where the problems are and there will be an exploit waiting to take over your computer.
